Site Upgrade

This week I finally bit the bullet and upgraded the VPS that bcaching runs on to the next service tier. Basically it means an extra 10 GB disk, 2 GB RAM (instead of 1), a 2nd CPU and more bandwidth.  It wasn’t essential since things were running reasonably well, but we were past 95% disk usage and 1 GB RAM was always a little tight.  Now there is plenty of disk space for maintenance, backups, and other things and plenty of memory headroom.

You should be able to see a noticeable improvement. I measured a 20% speed improvement for GPX file processing and the site just seems snappier to me.

I’m also planning to upgrade the database engine – MySQL to the latest version 5.5 from 5.1 in the next few weeks. It promises some performance improvements, but I haven’t had a chance to do any testing yet.

Here’s to another great year of caching!
